Liga MB Round 6: Santa Tecla edge Quezaltepeque by three points

The most exciting game of round 6 in the Liga MB took place in Santa Tecla. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 8th ranked Quezaltepeque (3-4) to top-ranked Santa Tecla (6-0) 70-67 on Thursday evening. Host team only slightly avoided a big embarassment. The best player for the winners was Cuban forward Yoel Cubillas (204-1994) who had a double-double by scoring 34 points (!!!) and 10 rebounds. Dominican Darwin Cabrera chipped in 11 points and 9 rebounds. At the other side the best for losing team was Dominican forward Rayner Moquete (185-1990, college: Binghamton) who recorded 22 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Undefeated Santa Tecla have an impressive six-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with San Salvador. Quezaltepeque at the other side dropped to the fifth place with four games lost. Santa Tecla is looking forward to face bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (#10) on the road in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Quezaltepeque will have a break next round.
Important game to mention about took place in Usultan. Fifth ranked Santiagueno (2-3) saved a 1-point victory at home edging their close opponent Fantasmas (2-4) 96-95 on Thursday evening. It was a good game for American-Colombian center Freddy Asprilla (206-1988, college: Canisius) who saved his team from a defeat with a double-double by scoring 13 points, 17 rebounds and 6 assists. Jeremy Wert contributed with 21 points and 11 rebounds for the winners. American guard Caleb Bowser (193, college: Georgian Court) replied with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists for Fantasmas. Despite that victory Santiagueno went down to sixth position due to points difference, which they share with Brujos. Fantasmas at the other side dropped to the eighth place with four games lost. Santiagueno will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Fantasmas will play at home against Cojute (#4) and hope to get back on the winning track.
Undefeated leader San Salvador delivered the sixth consecutive victory on Thursday night. This time they crushed 9th ranked Santa Ana (2-5) 99-47. Pablo Figueroa scored 20 points and 9 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners. San Salvador's coach Rainel Panfet felt very confident that he used 10 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was Anthony Strickland with 17 points and 7 rebounds. Undefeated San Salvador (6-0) have an impressive six-game winning streak. They maintain first position with a perfect record of 6 victories in a row, which they share with Santa Tecla. Loser Santa Ana keeps the ninth place with five games lost. Both teams do not play next round, which will be an opportunity for some rest.

In the last game of round 6 Metapan crushed Chalchuapa in a road game 116-83.



Chalchuapa - Metapan 83-116

There was no surprise when bottom-ranked Chalchuapa (0-7) was crushed at home by third ranked Metapan (4-2) 116-83 on Wednesday. Metapan dominated down low during the game scoring 82 of its points in the paint compared to Chalchuapa's 40. They outrebounded Chalchuapa 53-30 including a 23-9 advantage in offensive rebounds. Metapan looked well-organized offensively handing out 30 assists. Nicaraguan guard Deikel Sanchez (-1996) had a double-double by scoring 27 points, 17 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners and Cuban center Sergio Machado (208-1994) chipped in 19 points and 9 rebounds during the contest. Five Metapan players scored in double figures. Metapan's coach Reynaldo Corrales felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The best for the losing side was American Gorg Alhag (190-1997, college: Mayville St.) with 14 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists and Ryann Mercado scored 19 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Metapan maintains third position with 4-2 record having just two points less than leader San Salvador. Loser Chalchuapa still closes the standings with seven games lost. Metapan will meet at home Brujos (#6) in the next round. Chalchuapa will play against the league's second-placed Santa Tecla (#2) and hopes to get finally their first victory.

They outrebounded Santa Ana 60-24 including a 19-4 advantage in offensive rebounds. San Salvador looked well-organized offensively handing out 32 assists comparing to just 9 passes made by Santa Ana's players. Forward Pablo Figueroa (186-2000) scored 20 points and 9 rebounds to lead the charge for the winners and Panamanian Alejandro Grant (199-1993) chipped in 15 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists during the contest. Wert is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. American guard Caleb Bowser (193, college: Georgian Court) replied with a double-double by scoring 24 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists and guard Carlos Sorto (185-1997) added 17 points and 9 rebounds in the effort for Fantasmas. Five Santiagueno and four Fantasmas players scored in double figures. Despite that victory Santiagueno went down to sixth position due to points difference, which they share with Brujos.
